Reason #4 commercial soaps are detergents

Many of the so-called “soaps” made commercially are actually detergent bars. Most of these soaps are based on synthetic detergents instead of all-natural ingredients like handmade soaps. Synthetic detergents are much harsher on the skin than natural soaps, especially without the natural glycerin. So buy real all-natural soap and treat your skin right.

Reason #3 for buying handmade soap

Handmade soap is formulated for the user. Palm, palm kernel, olive and coconut oils make a better soap with a superior lather and a harder, longer lasting bar. Commercial producers are concerned only with profit and therefore use low quality ingredients. We don’t cut corners with our handmade soaps and use the best soothing essential oils.

Reason #2 for buying handmade soap

Handmade soap uses sustainable resources and is environmentally friendly. The fats and oils that we use are natural ingredients that are derived from perennial plants. Many are organic, whereas surfactants used in commercial products are derived from petroleum. Not only will our green friendly soaps make you feel and look good on the outside, but will also make you feel good inside that you are using a sustainable, environmentally friendly beauty product.

Reasons to buy handmade soap: Glycerin

In the next few posts, we’re going to list some of the reasons why everyone who is concerned with the health of their skin should be using handmade soap.

The first benefit is glycerin. Handmade soap retains all the natural glycerin, unlike commercial soaps. Glycerin is a natural emollient that boosts lather, is milder and more gentle on the skin. Commercial producers remove the glycerin because it is a valuable chemical in its own right.

Although handmade beauty products generally cost a little more, isn’t your skin worth it?

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is a an inexpensive foaming agent, a surfactant and common detergent known to cause irritation and inflammatory reactions in skin. It is a very common ingredient in commercial shampoos and soaps. SLS is also the most commonly used toothpaste detergent and has been related to intraoral adverse effects.

Sodium lauryl Sulphate is a just another example of the large beauty manufacturers cutting costs at the consumer’s expense. Our handmade beauty products are never made with harsh detergents and are thus hypoallergenic and skin safe.

Mineral oil

Mineral oil is used in many lip balms and lotions. It is a by-product of the distillation of petroleum used to produce gasoline and other crude oil products. According to some studies, “Chronic exposure to poorly refined base oils has the potential to cause skin cancer.” Ingesting too much mineral oil can also lead to diarrhea and nausea. The best thing to do is avoid products made with mineral oil and try our all natural lip balm and ultimate lotion bar.

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)

Butylated hydroxyanisole or BHA is used as a preservative in many cosmetics and shampoos. BHA can increase sensitivity to the sun’s damaging rays. The National Toxicology Program, from the Department of Health and Human Services, states that BHA is “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen” but only when in high concentrations. Either way don’t take changes. Instead use a natural shampoo bar that is sure to be free of BHA.

What’s in your beauty products?

We are going to start a series on some of the nasty stuff that is often found in commercial beauty products. Our first review is for Triclosan.

Triclosan is a chlorinated aromatic compound with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties often used in hand soap. Triclosan is also a component in some pesticides and penetrates the skin on contact and enters the bloodstream.

There have been many studies done on the effects of triclosan on lab animals. One such study showed that low doses of triclosan act as an endocrine disruptor in the North American bullfrog. Further studies showed that triclosan affects the immune system and showed a positive association with allergy or hay fever diagnosis and that triclosan exposure significantly impacts thyroid hormone concentrations in the male juvenile rats.

In addition to being harmful in lab studies, triclosan is toxic to aquatic bacteria at levels found in the environment.

Why take a chance with your health when you can buy natural beauty products from Enucia that are guaranteed to be free from harmful chemicals.
